The first inning did the whole thing
You could feel it before Cristopher Sánchez's first pitch left his hand. Dylan Cease got the ball for the American League and did exactly what an All-Star starter is supposed to do in the modern format: one inning, three strikeouts, dial it up to 99, sit down. What came after him was the story. Ten different AL relievers held the National League lineup to three hits combined. Nobody threw more than an inning. The NL didn't get a runner past second base until the seventh, and even then Yordan Alvarez ran down a sinking liner in left to end the threat.
It was the kind of pitching night that used to define All-Star Games in the 1960s and has almost disappeared in the era of hitter-friendly baseballs and one-swing home run derbies. Three hits allowed by an entire All-Star staff is a small history-book entry all by itself.
Bellinger's MVP moment
The two-run single won it in the first, but Bellinger sealed the MVP with his glove. Twice in centre field he ran down balls that off the bat looked like extra bases — a Manny Machado drive to the gap in the fourth and a Bryce Harper flare over Ketel Marte's head in the sixth. Both were tracked from crack of bat to catch without a stutter step. Bellinger was already a lock for the plaque by then, but the second catch got the loudest Philadelphia cheer of the night, in part because it robbed a Phillie.
Miguel Vargas of the White Sox added an eighth-inning solo home run — the game's only extra-base hit — to make it 4-0 and give the Chicago rebuild something to smile about on a national broadcast.
What Philadelphia got out of it
A pitcher starting for the losing side and an outfielder from the losing side robbing two of the home fans' favourites is not the storyline the city sold tickets on. But Citizens Bank Park delivered on the ceremony — Chase Utley threw the ceremonial first pitch to Bryce Harper, Halladay's family was honoured pre-game, and the crowd stuck around through the ninth even at 4-0 down. The place is built for October drama; a warm July night suits it fine too.
Standings implications: none, but the storylines matter
The All-Star Game hasn't decided home-field advantage in the World Series since 2016, so there is nothing on the standings sheet to reset. What the night did do was reset a few narratives. Cease looks locked in for a return to the Cy Young conversation. Bellinger's Cubs are heading into the second half with their star hitting like an MVP again. And the AL, which has now won five of the last seven Midsummer Classics, keeps chipping away at the NL's all-time lead in the series.
