Tonight's Must-Watch: World Cup Friendlies & WCWS

The headline Saturday slate is already obvious โ€” Champions League Final at noon ET, Game 7 in Oklahoma City after dinner, a FOX baseball window in between. Plenty has been written about all of it. The midday update: there's a quieter parallel slate of evening fixtures worth flipping to if you've had your fill of NBA conference-finals takes. Two World Cup tune-up friendlies, two single-elimination softball games, and a Concacaf-flavoured night that previews most of June.

Mexico vs Australia โ€” Rose Bowl, 6:00 PM ET

Twelve days before the World Cup kicks off and Mexico, one of three host nations, play their final big tune-up at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Australia are the visiting side. The matchup matters less than the moment: Mexico are using the friendly window to lock in their starting eleven, settle the No. 9 question, and run the press they want to use against Group A's technical sides.

For Australia, the trip is about minutes. The Socceroos qualified through Asian play-off and arrive at the World Cup with a squad in transition, hunting a couple of friendly results against bigger names to build confidence. Expect a settled Mexico starting eleven and a rotated Australia side; expect Mexico to want a clean sheet more than they want a 4-0.

The match is on TUDN and FS1, kickoff 6:00 PM ET. If you have any Mexico fans in your circle, this is where they'll be tonight. Our soccer page carries the live score.

Ecuador vs Saudi Arabia โ€” Harrison, NJ, 7:30 PM ET

Sports Illustrated Stadium in New Jersey is the venue, and the match is the kind of friendly that almost nobody notices until one of the two teams pulls off something at the actual tournament and you wish you'd kept tabs. Ecuador qualified for the World Cup through South American qualifying and have a young, fast, well-organised side built around Moisรฉs Caicedo. Saudi Arabia, the surprise of the 2022 tournament, arrive with a slightly rebuilt squad and a coach trying to decide his shape.

What to actually watch for: Ecuador's midfield press and how Saudi Arabia's back three handles being squeezed by it. Both coaches will name something close to a first-choice eleven for the first hour. After that, expect six or seven changes a side and the shape will go to bits, which is what friendlies do.

WCWS Game 7 and Game 8 โ€” Devon Park, all evening

Two single-elimination softball games at the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City. The bracket runs winners-bracket and losers-bracket through the week, so by Saturday every game is a must-win for at least one side. Day 3 lines up like this:

  1. Game 7 โ€” winners' bracket survivor vs survivor, 3:00 PM ET on ABC. The winner is one win away from the championship series; the loser drops into Sunday with their season on the line.
  2. Game 8 โ€” elimination, 7:00 PM ET on ESPN. Lose and you're out. Win and you live to play twice more on Sunday.

The WCWS is one of the most consistently dramatic single-elimination tournaments in American sports โ€” tight pitch counts, late-inning walk-offs, and a Devon Park crowd that punches well above its size. If you've never watched softball at this level, Game 8 is a good one to dip into.

The half-distracted plan

Realistically, most American viewers have Game 7 in OKC on at 8:15 PM ET as the night's anchor. That leaves a clean window before tip-off โ€” WCWS Game 7 at 3, Mexico at 6, WCWS Game 8 and the Ecuador friendly running concurrently around 7:00โ€“7:30, then the NBA at 8:15. Picture-in-picture earns its keep.

One bit of wishful streaming: TUDN's coverage of Mexico-Australia tends to come with the loudest commentary in the building. If your household includes anyone who wants the room to feel like an event, run that as background.

What it all points to

The World Cup is twelve days out. Every friendly on this calendar is a coach trying to settle one decision before it really counts โ€” a starting eleven, a press trigger, a set-piece routine. Watch tonight knowing the players on the pitch are auditioning for tournament minutes, not putting on a show. The shape and the substitutions tell you more than the scoreline.

FAQ

Where can I stream Mexico vs Australia? TUDN subscribers via TUDN app, FS1 via cable login or fuboTV / YouTube TV. Local Pasadena viewers can also pick up the broadcast in Spanish on regional Univision affiliates.

Are these friendlies on the FIFA international window? Yes โ€” this is the last sanctioned window before the World Cup opens on June 11, so squads are at full strength minus late-call injuries.

Why is the WCWS so often a single-elimination thrill? By Game 7 and 8 of the double-elimination bracket, every team left has already lost once or is in the loser's bracket. One bad inning and the season's over. That structure forces aggressive managing โ€” closers brought in earlier, pinch-hitters used freely โ€” which is what makes the late games great TV.
