Two Championship Game 2s. One 8 PM Window.

Thursday nights in June can be quiet. Tonight is not. Two championship series stage their Game 2 at exactly the same hour, a marquee MLB interleague game tips off earlier, and there is even a late tennis tie-in if you want to push past midnight. Here is the realistic plan for an evening's worth of TV โ€” start times, channels, and what the stakes actually are.

8:00 PM ET โ€” Stanley Cup Final, Game 2: Vegas at Carolina (ABC)

The bigger of the two. Vegas stole Game 1 in Raleigh on Tuesday by rallying from a 2-0 deficit, with Tomas Hertl scoring the go-ahead goal with 3:24 left in the third period. That made the Golden Knights the first road team in Stanley Cup Final history to win Game 1 with a multi-goal comeback. The Hurricanes are now on home ice for a second straight night and have to find a way to slow Vegas's top six before the series moves west.

Things to watch: whether Frederik Andersen can stay sharp under the Vegas forecheck after letting in five on Tuesday, whether Carolina can keep its first-period intensity for sixty minutes instead of twenty, and whether Vegas's defensive pairings continue to produce points the way Theodore and McNabb did in Game 1. If Carolina drops this, they are heading to T-Mobile Arena down 0-2 with their season effectively on the brink.

8:00 PM ET โ€” Women's College World Series Final, Game 2: Texas vs. Texas Tech (ESPN)

The exact same time slot, on a different network. Texas took Game 1 of the best-of-three final on Wednesday 7-3 over Texas Tech, an all-Big-12 finale that nobody outside Lubbock or Austin had on their bingo card three weeks ago. The Longhorns are one win from the program's first national title. The Red Raiders, making their first WCWS Final appearance, need this game to force a decider on Friday night.

NiJaree Canady's arm is the entire Texas Tech equation. She has thrown more pitches across this postseason than anyone in the country and her workload is a real story. If Texas can get into her early โ€” they got runs across in three different innings in Game 1 โ€” this could end at 9:30 PM Central. If Canady locks in, we are getting baseball into the late innings.

The remote-control problem

Both Game 2s start at the same minute. There is no graceful solution. Three realistic options:

  1. The picture-in-picture play. Hockey is a full-screen sport โ€” the puck is small, the camera angles are wide, and watching it in a thumbnail is not really watching it. Put the WCWS on PIP. Softball is a slow-game, big-event sport that survives the smaller window better.
  2. The intermission swap. NHL intermissions are 17 minutes. Most college softball games stretch past two hours. Flip to the WCWS during the first and second intermissions and you will see the meaningful at-bats.
  3. The DVR the loser strategy. Decide before 8 which game means more to you, watch it live, record the other. The Stanley Cup Final is once a year. The WCWS championship is once a year. The decision is personal.

7:10 PM ET โ€” MLB: Yankees at Dodgers (FS1)

The pre-game appetiser. The Yankees and Dodgers do not see each other often in the regular season โ€” interleague series like this are why the unbalanced schedule exists. Pitching matchups permitting, this is a decent way to fill the 7-to-8 window before the championship windows open. If the starter on either side is not on, you will be flipping to the studio shows in fifteen minutes anyway.

Tennis, for the night owls

Roland-Garros's day session wrapped earlier with Mirra Andreeva booking her first Grand Slam final against Marta Kostyuk. The other women's semifinal โ€” Diana Shnaider against Maja Chwaliล„ska โ€” was scheduled to follow. Depending on how Paris's schedule held up, replays and extended highlights will likely run on the Tennis Channel overnight. Set a reminder if you care about Saturday's final.

Quick-glance ranking

If you can only commit to one screen tonight, here is the order: Stanley Cup Game 2, WCWS Final Game 2, Yankees-Dodgers, tennis highlights. The hockey gets the top slot because the series is genuinely up for grabs and because Game 2 on the road in a 1-0 series is the most pivotal swing-game spot in any best-of-seven.
