Norway Shock France · Spain, Belgium Top Groups

Friday in the World Cup was supposed to be Spain's day. Then Norway beat France 4-1 in Houston and the entire right side of the bracket changed shape. Six matches closed Groups G, H and I. Three group winners were decided, one of the tournament's pre-event favourites dropped into a much harder Round of 16 path, and Cape Verde scraped through to a knockout-stage debut. Full recap below.

Norway 4–1 France: the result of the tournament so far

Erling Haaland had not started the previous group game. Stale Solbakken brought him back, paired him with Antonio Nusa, and France spent 70 minutes chasing shadows. Haaland scored twice — a header from a Ødegaard cross in the 14th minute and a clean run in behind on 38. Nusa added a third before the hour and Oscar Bobb finished a counter in stoppage time. Kylian Mbappé pulled one back from the spot, but Didier Deschamps' side were second-best across the pitch. France finish second in Group I and slide onto the side of the bracket that contains Argentina, Brazil and the Group K winner.

Norway top Group I in their first World Cup since 1998. The discourse will be loud and earned: this is the highest-profile group-stage result in a generation, and it puts Solbakken's side on a kinder path to the quarter-finals.

Spain 1–0 Uruguay: business class

Spain were the better side throughout in Atlanta. Lamine Yamal hit the post in the 11th minute, and Pedri eventually broke the deadlock on 67 with a low driven finish from a Mikel Merino lay-off. Uruguay had one real chance — a Darwin Núñez header that Unai Simón fingertipped onto the bar in stoppage time. The result confirms Spain as Group H winners with nine points and an unblemished tournament so far. Uruguay finish second and head into the Round of 32 in decent shape.

Belgium 5–1 New Zealand: tune-up

Belgium were already through and through as group winners but used the night to give Romelu Lukaku 90 minutes and Kevin De Bruyne 60. Lukaku finished twice, Jérémy Doku terrorised the All Whites' right back, and Charles De Ketelaere added a late free-kick. New Zealand will go home with one point and the memory of a Chris Wood consolation header that briefly threatened to embarrass Belgium in the 70th minute. The group order remains Belgium first, Egypt second on goal difference.

Egypt 1–1 Iran: through with a draw apiece

Egypt only needed a point. Mohamed Salah delivered it in the 23rd minute, finishing a Trezeguet cutback. Mehdi Taremi equalised from the penalty spot just before the hour after a soft handball call on Mohamed Hany. Both sides played out the final 30 minutes at training-ground pace. Iran are eliminated; Egypt advance as Group G runner-up.

Senegal 5–0 Iraq · Cape Verde 0–0 Saudi Arabia

Senegal closed out their group with a rout in San Francisco — Nicolas Jackson hat-trick, Sadio Mané from the spot, and an Ismaila Sarr counter-attack finish. They go through second in Group I behind Norway. Iraq finish bottom and out.

Cape Verde made the more remarkable headline. A goalless draw with Saudi Arabia in Toronto was enough — combined with Spain's win — to lift the islanders into one of the eight best-third-place qualifying spots. Their first World Cup, and they will play another match in it. The federation chief was on FIFA's broadcast feed in tears at full time.

Updated knockout picture

With Groups G, H and I sealed, here is what is locked into the Round of 32 ahead of today's three remaining group finales:

  • Group G: 1. Belgium · 2. Egypt
  • Group H: 1. Spain · 2. Uruguay
  • Group I: 1. Norway · 2. France · 3. Senegal (advances)

Cape Verde, Curaçao and one of the Group F third-placers also currently sit inside the eight best-third qualifying line, but that table cannot be finalised until tonight's Groups J, K, L finales complete. Expect at least one shuffle.

What it means for France

France's path is now the hardest of any pre-tournament favourite. As Group I runner-up they project to face the winner of Group J (Argentina, in all likelihood) in the Round of 16 — assuming both win their Round of 32 ties. Deschamps will have heard the post-game questions about his selection, about Eduardo Camavinga's continued deployment as a left back, and about whether Aurélien Tchouaméni is fit to start. None of those questions get easier from here.

What it means for Norway

They get a kinder bracket. Round of 32 against a third-place qualifier, then projected quarter-final lane through the Group K runner-up. None of that diminishes the achievement of finishing ahead of France with nine points from three games. Haaland leads the tournament with five goals and is now the heavy Golden Boot favourite.

FAQ

When are the Round of 32 fixtures confirmed? After tonight's three Group J, K, L finales. The bracket is published immediately after the late kickoff in Arlington.

Has any defending champion lost a group game like this before? Yes — Germany lost 1-0 to Mexico in 2018, France lost to Tunisia in 2022. But losing by three goals in a group-deciding finale is a different category of result entirely.
