Matchday 8 of the 2026 World Cup belonged to the co-hosts. Mexico became the first team into the knockout rounds and Canada won their first ever men's World Cup match โ€” and not by one or two goals. By six. Switzerland kept Group B alive with a four-spot, and South Africa picked up an unlikely point against Czechia that keeps their qualification dream technically breathing. Here is everything that happened on June 18.

Mexico 1, South Korea 0 โ€” El Tri are through

Luis Romo's second-half header was the decisive moment, but the goal was made by a Korean error. Goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu came to claim a routine cross and collided with his own defender, dropping the ball at Romo's feet for the simplest of finishes. From there, Mexico played the only way they know how at the Estadio Guadalajara โ€” with 50,000 voices behind every clearance.

Raรบl Rangel saved Mexico late, sprawling to keep out a deflected shot in the 88th, then snatching the rebound off a Korean forward's boot. That double save turned a nervy lead into a Group A title. Mexico finish top with a game to spare, secure their knockout venue at Estadio Azteca, and become the first nation to qualify for the round of 32.

Canada 6, Qatar 0 โ€” a historic afternoon at BMO Field

You won't see a happier dressing room at this tournament. Canada had never previously won a match at a men's World Cup across three appearances. They corrected that in record-breaking fashion. Jonathan David scored a hat-trick โ€” his second a delicate chip over a stranded keeper โ€” Cyle Larin added his customary poacher's tap-in, Nathan Saliba volleyed home from the edge of the area, and Qatar's Tarek Salman put through his own net to complete the rout.

By full time, the scoreboard read 6-0, the largest winning margin by a CONCACAF team in men's World Cup history. Canada move to six points, level with Mexico, and need only a draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina to confirm their place in the knockout rounds.

Standings after June 18. Mexico are through; Canada need only a draw with Bosnia to join them.

Switzerland 4, Bosnia and Herzegovina 1

A drab first half ended scoreless. Then somebody must have said something at the break, because all five goals arrived in the second 45. Granit Xhaka opened the scoring with a 25-yard strike that he'd been threatening for two games. Breel Embolo added a tidy second after a Bosnia turnover. Edin Dลพeko pulled one back from the spot. Two more Swiss goals โ€” a Ndoye breakaway and a Vargas penalty โ€” closed it out. Switzerland keep alive their hopes of finishing second in Group B; Bosnia are now hanging on by a thread.

Czechia 1, South Africa 1

This was supposed to be a routine three points for Czechia. It wasn't. South Africa, reduced to ten men inside the hour, dug in and somehow snatched a 79th-minute equaliser through Lyle Foster. Patrik Schick had given the Czechs a first-half lead that they failed to extend, and the draw leaves both teams mathematically alive but realistically chasing a miracle on the final matchday.

What it means for the bracket

  • Group A is decided at the top: Mexico are through as winners. South Korea need a win or draw against South Africa on the final matchday to lock up second.
  • Group B is Canada's to lose: They face Bosnia next. Switzerland still need a win and a Canada slip-up to top the group.
  • Best third-place picture is forming: With 12 groups and 24 third-place finishers in play for 8 knockout spots, even a four-point group third has a strong chance of advancing.

Three numbers from the day

6 โ€” Canada's winning margin, the biggest by a CONCACAF team in a men's World Cup match. 3 โ€” Jonathan David goals, becoming the first Canadian to score a World Cup hat-trick. 50,019 โ€” announced attendance at Estadio Guadalajara for Mexico's clincher, the highest of the tournament so far outside the opening ceremony.
